Well Chainmaille By MBOI has spread its wings again and made our products available on the new Handmade Artists' Shop. The HAFshop as it is called is a new online marketplace that is dedicated to handmade. The management and support are second to none and have been excellent. Setting up a shop was very simple and easy. It only costs 5.00 a month which is less expensive than all the other online venues out there. Listing products is a snap which is really helpful considering time is always an issue.

A couple days ago I became a full member of the Handmade Artists' Forum which allowed me to set up as a vendor in the Handmade Artists' Shop. Now this may seem like a redundancy as I already have an etsy shop, however after some indepth research I've found several things that make HAF stand out. For starters they support ALL of US; whether you are a seller on Etsy, ArtFire, Zibbet, your own storefront, twitter, facebook or a blogger if you craft with your own talents on any level they support and love you for it. Secondly I don't know of any other format that has the experience and dedication behind it that HAF does, Andrew and Kimberly head up a team that provides round the clock support for all levels of their site. E.g. It's 4am and I just tried to create a new seller profile only to realize that I clicked the wrong link and created a buyer profile instead... emailed their admin page... fixed in MINUTES!

The Handmade Artists' Forum

I'd like to take a moment to introduce you to a cooperative collective of Handmade Artists that I recently joined. The Handmade Artists' Forum (or HAF) was founded in April 2009 by Andrew & Kimberly Kitchen in order to provide a venue for all manner of artists to unite and support each other.

The idea is really rather simple....cooperative competition. Not everyone is in direct competition with each other because of the wide variety of arts represented. However, those who are have come to understand that we can band together to succeed.

The glass is absolutely clear and has been hand painted with fat pumpkins and bright sunflowers that are perfect for your coffee or tea! All of my glassware has been hand painted with heat cured enamel for years of use. It can be washed in the top rack of your dishwasher. This means you can actually use it!

Full Persian Steampunk Necklace

This necklace is my first attempt at Steampunk. It’s made using jewelers brass in a full persian weave. The necklace measures 22″ long as I felt the pendant should hang a little lower than normal because of the size. The pendant is the inards of a Elgin Natonal Pocket watch that has been wrapped with a 3/4 persian and some modification to hold the watch in place. The pendant is 2″ in diameter and whole piece is a weighty 5 ounces. This piece is also reversible if you need a different look, the back of the pendant will give off a different feel dependant on where your wearing to. The clasp is a handmade hammered brass “S” clasp. As always we can re-size the necklace to your required lenght as needed. This is one of a kind piece and will not be reproduced.

Artists Unite to Support Handmade

Well a new movement is among us where hadnmade artists have banned together in a unified effort to support each other. Over 170 artists have joined the Handmade Artists’ Forum with more joining everyday. One member, is a fellow mailler or this a case a femailler, Jill from Liv’nGood Jewelry who has also joined in this effort to support eah other as a community of artists. Jill does some beautiful work so check her out at her blog or Etsy Shop.

Many of you may be saying why is a chainmailler helping their competition, well I’ll tell you. I know that I’m not the only game in town selling chainmaille, their are many, but I might have something that she doesn’t sell and visa versa. So instead of competing against each other we are keeping our customers educated about what is available out there.

I was browsing the web and came across the artist Marie-Michele of Mademoiselle M I’m guessing she’s French. All I know is the the jewelry crossed all language barriers, were beauty was just beauty. I think that as a handmade artist we should embrace each others work and support our fellow artisans. That’s one reason that we started the Handmade Artisan Forum and we are quickly finding out that artists around the world want to speak to each other and support each other. This tutorial is a detailed step by step on how to make a Byzantine chainmaille weave. We have painstakingly made these instructions so that a beginner will be able to go through without a problem. The tutorial is full of pictures which graphically guide you through each step. We will offer full support for any questions you may have while working on your piece. The downloadable file is in PDF format, if you don’t have a PDF reader you can download it for free.

Our kits will have enough rings in it to make a nine inch bracelet with a couple extra just in case you have a mistake. The rings will all be polished and smooth and of the utmost of quality, if you don’t want your rings polished just let us know by adding a note a checkout. The kit will also contain the tutorial and a lobster clasp. You will need two pair of pliers to construct your bracelet, the pliers are obviously not included.

Breast Cancer Awareness Auction

Just a side note Kimberly my partner in crime with MBOI lost her grandmother to breast cancer in 2003 this was a very tough thing to go through as you can imagine as her grandmother was an intregal part of her upbringing in Montana. Her grandmother honestly is directly responsible for our business starting as she got Kimberly involved in crafts at a young age.

First of all before we start answering questions it is important to know that
Makin the Best of It and Chainmaille by MBOI are one company with Makin The Best
of it being the parent company of the two.

We are comprised of a husband
and wife team, with my wife Kimberly, being the originator and president of our
little craft business.

What do you like best to create?

Chainmaille jewelry is my
preferred outlet for my creativity. My wife though has much more varied
interests such as ornamental wire wrap and painting. I could not even begin to
list all the different crafts that she is involved in.
As for me, chainmaille
has given me and my wife, who is a fellow femailler, a way to express ourselves
and have a highly marketable and unique product that people enjoy.

What is your preferred medium? Why?

My preferred medium is
sterling silver. Sterling is relatively soft and malleable, which is easier on
the hands. It also shines up so pretty and holds its value

These earrings are made in a Romanov chainmaille weave which is a Byzantine varient. These earrings measure about an inch long from the bottom of the ear wire. The ear wire is made from solid copper and the turquoise stone is 4mm round.

Artistic Chain Maille Elements by MBOI

Chain maille jewelry designs can get rather boring to do after a while so a good chain maille artist strives to bring in different elements to make their jewelry distinctive. One artisan whom I stumbled upon in metalchasers.com now called jewelrygeeks.com has great inspirational examples of how to step up chain maille designs.
MakintheBestOfIt or MBOI for short, is a wire wrap and chain maille enthuasist. She is multi-talented with not just one but TWO Etsy stores - one of jewelry designs and one for her lovely hand painted glass. I don't know how she does it all for she is a second time round full time student with two small boys. She has a deeply ingrained creative streak so much so her husband says she has a really bad case of crafters ADD!
Her chain maille designs show her versatility and talent for linking jump rings together. She combines coloured rings to highlight metals - her copper and sterling Byzantine ladder bracelet (above) combines silver with copper which is one of my favourite combinations. Yet I still see the occasional question on jewelry making forums - "Can I mix metals"? Of course you can! The jewelry will look gorgeous.

Another design element is using alternative structures rather than just a straight chain. One of her most stunning designs is her sterling silver chain maille encased Salvation pendant. This unique design has 7 Swarovski crystal bicones in rainbow colours all in a row and framed with inverted round maille. Another example is her bronze Persian Cross which features a full Persian cross pendant on a half Persian 3 in 1 chain.

But I've saved the best to last for this piece was a labour of love for one of her music obsessed sons. The chain maille guitar strap was truly an inspired choice as a gift for some one (often male) who isn't into jewelry or is too young to use key rings! Jewelry is usually just decorative but here MBOI has made chain maille into a functional piece of art!

An Introduction To Chainmaille

Chainmail was the earliest form of metal armour and was probably invented before
the 5th century by the ancient Celts. The name mail comes from the French word
"maille" which is derived from the Latin "macula" meaning "mesh of a net". The
armour itself involved the linking of iron or steel rings, the ends of which
were either pressed together, welded or riveted. Sometimes the rings were
stamped out of a sheet of iron and these were then used in alternate rows with
riveted links. The most common form of chainmail is the "four-in-one" pattern in
which each link has four others linked through it. A few shirts have been found
that appear to have been made of quilted fabric or leather to which were sewn
rings and scales, and these shirts are not considered "true" mail.

Mail armour provided a highly effective defense against the weapons of the Medieval Period. Ok enough of that, this project took several months and I don't know how many rings.
Euro 6 and 1 was used for the front cover, inside flaps, and back cover with 3 and 1 edge and a dragonscale spine. All stainless steel and bronze.
Stats: 20ga 5/32 for 6 and 1 and small dragonscale rings
18ga 5.5 mm for large dragonscale rings
